Patrick Wales-Dinan Guides Monte Vista Distance Runners to Historic Championship Era

Patrick Wales Dinan

Danville, California - Patrick Wales-Dinan is in his ninth year leading the Monte Vista High School cross country and track teams. The program has grown stronger under his guidance.

The girls cross country team won the CIF NCS title two years in a row. That 2025-26 win was the twelfth section championship in school history and the third in three years. In spring 2025 the girls track team also took the CIF NCS Tri Valley title for the first time in school history.

Growth on Both Sides of the Program

Patrick Wales-Dinan brought almost twenty years of coaching experience when he joined Monte Vista. He had already worked with runners at Long Beach State Harvard University Duke University and Williams College. In those roles he helped more than twenty athletes become NCAA All Americans. He also guided several national champions and more than ten runners to reach the United States national championships or Olympic Trials.

Both teams have improved. The boys cross country team made the CIF State Championships three years in a row ending in 2023. In 2022 the team placed among the state’s top ten. The boys distance runners have also broken several school records such as Ethan Miller, who became the first Monte Vista athlete to finish the 3200 meters in less than nine minutes.

The girls program has enjoyed its strongest stretch yet. The track team won the East Bay Athletic League title three years in a row from 2022 to 2024. Distance runners have also done well in relays. Monte Vista has claimed more than one section title in the 4x800 since that race joined the championship schedule. In 2025 the girls distance medley relay became the first group from the school to finish under twelve minutes.

During Wales-Dinan’s time at the school athletes have set fifteen school records. They have also recorded more than ninety top ten marks on the all time lists. These results show both individual progress and solid team depth.

Focus on Everyday Training

Wales-Dinan believes talent is only the starting point. He puts care into the regular days of practice the habits that build strength over months and the way athletes support one another. Runners learn to treat hard workouts and rest with equal attention. This approach has helped the Mustangs stay competitive in a demanding region for high school distance running.

Families and athletes see the championships and the records. They also notice how the runners handle the full season. That mix of strong results and steady team habits defines the current time at Monte Vista.

What Comes Next

Nine years of work have given the program a firm base. Wales-Dinan continues to balance the demands of competition with the growth of student athletes. His record shows what careful planning and consistent effort can create when runners stay committed to the process.

That process goes beyond race-day performance. Wales-Dinan places importance on building consistent training habits, understanding individual strengths and weaknesses, and helping athletes respond constructively to setbacks. He encourages runners to focus on steady progress rather than becoming overly dependent on short-term results. Over the course of a season, small improvements in preparation, communication, recovery, and discipline can make a significant difference.

For Wales-Dinan, coaching is also about creating an environment where athletes can challenge themselves while remaining accountable to their teammates. The goal is to help each runner make meaningful progress while contributing to a stronger and more connected team. This long-term approach allows athletes to develop skills that remain valuable well beyond their time in competitive running.

About Patrick Wales-Dinan

Patrick Wales-Dinan is the head coach for cross country and distance events at Monte Vista High School. He has coached high school and college runners since 2006, working with athletes at different stages of development and helping them build the skills, discipline, and confidence needed to compete at a high level.

Earlier in his coaching career, Patrick worked with programs at Long Beach State, Harvard University, Duke University, and Williams College. Across these experiences, he has coached athletes who went on to become NCAA All-Americans, national champions, and competitors at the United States National Championships and Olympic Trials. More than twenty of the athletes he has coached have earned NCAA All-American honors, while several have gone on to win national championships.

At Monte Vista, Patrick focuses on developing student-athletes both as competitors and as people. His approach emphasizes consistent training, long-term development, teamwork, accountability, and learning how to handle the challenges that come with competitive running. Rather than focusing only on race results, he works to help athletes understand the habits and decisions that lead to lasting improvement.

Patrick believes strong teams are built through trust, shared standards, and a willingness to support one another through the difficult parts of a season. His coaching experience across high school and collegiate programs has shaped a practical approach that combines performance development with the broader lessons athletes can carry beyond the track and cross country course.

Today, he continues to guide Monte Vista student-athletes toward meaningful athletic progress while helping them develop the discipline, resilience, and confidence that can serve them well long after their competitive running careers are over.
